Wider Curriculum
At Verwood C of E First School, we deliver the full National Curriculum through a rich and engaging wider curriculum that provides every child with a broad, balanced and enriching education. Our carefully planned curriculum supports holistic development, nurturing creativity, critical thinking, physical coordination and cultural awareness alongside academic achievement. Like our core subjects, our foundation subjects are structured with clear sequential progression, ensuring that knowledge and skills are systematically developed and built upon over time. Through this progressive approach, children develop a secure understanding of key concepts and are able to apply their learning with increasing confidence and independence. Where appropriate, foundation subjects are brought together through meaningful cross-curricular topics, enabling children to make connections, deepen their understanding and see the relevance of their learning. These enriching experiences enhance achievement in core subjects such as English and mathematics while fostering curiosity, confidence and a lifelong love of learning.
Forest School
Our Forest School provision is a valued and enriching part of school life, offering children regular opportunities to learn, explore and thrive in the natural environment. EYFS and Year 1 pupils take part in weekly Forest School sessions throughout the academic year, while pupils in Years 2 to 4 enjoy a full term of Forest School annually, ensuring all children benefit from high-quality outdoor learning. Led by Hannah Farmer, our Woodland Wonders Forest School Lead, sessions include a wide range of hands-on activities such as den building, woodland exploration, natural crafts, tool use, and carefully supervised fire-pit experiences including fire lighting and cooking. These experiences nurture a deep sense of awe and wonder as children discover the beauty, mystery and changing seasons of the natural world. Our Forest School provision strongly reflects our Christian vision to Be the Light and Hope, as children are encouraged to shine their own light through curiosity, resilience and care for God’s creation, developing confidence and hope through meaningful experiences in the outdoors.
Eco School
We are very proud that Verwood CE First School and Nursery have been awarded an ‘Eco Schools Green Flag’ for the past 4 years. Being awarded Eco-Schools accreditation is the perfect way to acknowledge, reward and celebrate the ecological achievements of our pupils. It clearly demonstrates that their hard work is appreciated, and it provides them with the confidence and motivation needed to continue actively engaging with environmental issues throughout their lifetimes. Finally, it also tells local communities that our school is forward-thinking and promotes youth-led environmental education and action.
